Judge Mary M. Schroeder has had a groundbreaking career. She was the first female Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Before that, Judge Schroeder sat on the Arizona Court of Appeals. In private practice at Lewis and Roca in 1973, she was the first woman to achieve partnership in a large firm in Arizona. In a July 2013 oral history interview, Judge Schroeder reflects on navigating a career in the law as a woman and a mother, her opinion in the Hirabayashi case, and significant issues she faced during her term as Chief Judge.
